The Future is Cubic

Great developments have been achieved in the past decade, creating resources of high quality in open format that are downloadable and usable offline: Wikipedia, Khan Academy Lite, MOOCs like FUN, Bloom books, Guthenberg project books, but also health promotion videos, legal resources etc. Organizations like LWB and many others, including libraries, use these contents in very different contexts, adapting them to each location according to community needs an project objectives. They are usually preloaded onto raspberry pi like servers and distributed through a local area network. In order to improve the impact of the projects, the key is therefore: improving access of ICT4D organizations to downloadable open resources (pdf, video, app, sound, ebook ...)

Description

There are two main challenges that ICT4D (Information Communication Technology for Development) organizations (NGOs, libraries, community centers) face are: • Quality and quantity of contents to address the wide range of contexts and project objectives • Offline accessibility: many of the locations where we are working have intermittent, very expensive or unreliable connectivity BSF(LWB in english) is working with a community of developers from other open source projects such as Wikimedia and OpenStreetMap on IdeasCube, an open source tool that is both: • An open source software which can be installed on any computer or server (in a library, a health clinic, a university, or an individual's home) and provides access to contents, offline, via an intuitive interface. This software enables offline/online synchronization of contents when internet is indeed available. • A collaborative web portal that enables anyone to share contents identified on other platforms (via APIs), to participate in the curation of content sets for specific use/contexts/languages, to download these content sets on any device with the IdeasCube software installed.
