Challenge

Promote inclusion, reduce anger, become peace builders through gardening activities

Description

This program promotes inclusion and equality in Mayan communities of Guatemala through gardening and cooperative play. The program director is a horticulture and education expert with many years of experience leading gardening workshops in Spanish. Program activities are based on the Junior Master Gardener curricula and adapted to rural settings in developing nations. The program also promotes healthy lifestyles through gardening, cooking lessons, games and dialogues about school violence, inequality and anger. A new component of the program is the Play for Peace model, based on the belief that a) Everyone can be an architect, builder, and leader for peace; b) Every community can create and sustain peace; and c) Play is one of the most innovative catalysts for peace in the world today. Through playful action, kids are inspired to generate new avenues for building peace and become more resilient in the face of challenges. US volunteers travel to Guatemala to help conduct programs.
